What defines Leadership?

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Leadership? Is it a powerful speaker, a team captain, or a student standing up for what is right? I believe leadership is so much more than a title or a victory; it is a mindset, a choice, and a commitment to growth.

One value that FCCLA Members learn is that leadership starts with service. Whether you are organizing a community wide project, mentoring a peer, or stepping up when no one else will, this shows leadership! It is about putting others first and using your strengths to make a difference!

Leaders see beyond the present. They think for the future. FCCLA encourages us to think big! Think about our careers, families, and the communities we impact! Leadership means not just seeing the small picture, but means to see the WHOLE picture and working to bring the vision to life.

True leadership is colored by character. It means to be honest, stand up for what is right, and make tough decisions even when it's not easy! FCCLA programs and competitive events help us develop the confidence we need to lead with integrity every step of the way.

Perfection does not equal leadership. Leadership is all about growing. Stepping outside of your comfort zone, learning from your mistakes and pushing yourself to improve consistently are all qualities of a great leader. FCCLA gives members many opportunities to grow as leaders from chapter meetings all the way to national events!

Personally, there is no single definition or answer to the question of "what is leadership" because it looks different on everyone. It doesn't matter if you are the quiet problem-solver, the energetic motivator, or the thoughtful planner, your unique strengths and skills are what defines you as a leader. FCCLA helps members discover those strengths and use them to lead with confidence.

Leadership is not for adults, or CEOs, or elected officials - it's for us - the next generation of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

So next time don't ask yourself: What is a leader? Ask yourself: What type of leader do I want to be? And, What steps will I take today to become that type of leader?
